Sequoia Classic- Masters

The boys executed perfectly this weekend to lead Bosch out for yet another Sierra Pacific win. The win was not only Brian's third straight, but it gave him enough to claim this year's 99 series title.

The 99 series consisted of a combined points series from events held in Merced, Fresno, and Visalia over the last three weeks. I thought it was a nice feature added to this years early races.

Catch the action at ibnsports.com where they have included video of the entire race. Click on Archive, Sequoia Cycling Classic, then Masters 35+ 123.

Brian said coming around Steve Reaney for the win wasn't easy.

Nice job guys... you have it down to a science at this point. Brian I'm slowly starting to think that you are my new hero!
I was also glad to see that Butler did his thing in the Cat 4 race - When he can ride with the adults he will be ready to rumble.

When does the Tuesday/Thursday night at Woodward park start - I feel like being humiliated!

That's funny about Brian being a hero. The kids were taking his autograph on Sunday after the race!

Hi,

It was my son who I sent over.... Brian pays him and his friends.

I sure hope that he shares the winnings with you Joel - every time I see him win it is often after a race where you among others that have been putting significant amount of work.

Lars,
Woodward Park rides are done for the winter. Now we doing the real training rides! Meet at Copper & Willow at 5:30pm, down Willow to Friant, up broken bridge, then to four corners (road 208 & 210).
Same ride we're doing on Sundays back before it got to cold for you guys! Ha! Return trip has been a wee bit faster.

Hope to see you out there!

"before it got to cold for you guys?????" - it never got to cold for us! Toby and I have been riding all winter, three mornings a week and a longer trip in the weekend. We just ride at another pace - that is why you don't see us.
I was told that after the time change that you guys would ride early evening in woodward park doing loops - I may have miunderstood that one.
I guess the other ride could be fun to try to hang on to, at leaste out to Broken Bridge. I'm not sure where the the road 208 & 210 is.... is that up at the school?
What is the race schedula for the nexst few weeks?

Once the time has changed, we no longer need to ride evenings in the park. With the sun light it is safer to be on the road. The 208/210 intersection is about 6-8 minutes past the Millerton Lake Madera side turn off. For sure not as far as Spring Valley school.

Orosi (Our race to work) and Hanford this weekend.

Thansk for the update Britter...

That seems like a ride I could give a try. I'm think I can keep up until the broken bridge hill - then I could do the hills in myown "fat ass" pace and just turn when I see you guys coming back and try to hang on, on the flat part on the way home. I will propperly not call anyone out for a sprint on the willow hill if you guys are going full speed on Friant. I'll bring a bungy cord and hook it up to Coby aka the locomotive. What is this ride in time/miles? 1.5h/30? Is this "give it all you have" speed or ???

I will try to get Alex and Toby fired up. Riding at 5.30am s getting a little old after the time change.

It is 1.5 hours. Coming back down Friant it is fast until the sprint finish in Pumpkin Valley (where the Coke Hallowell house is). Going out has been a nice pace line at around 20-22 mph. Cya at Copper and Willow @ 5:30.

Britter,

I think I can give that a go. Is it still Tuesday/Thursday. I may just turn off and go up Willow on the way home since I have a feeling that I will not be a contender in the sprint (read: be able to hang on out on Friant). I don't even need to know the outcome, Brian will win it anyway.

Do some of the other "none bad a.. racers" join you on these rides or is it only the hard core group?

All types come out to the ride. There will always be someone to ride with. The Tuesday rides are to get in some speed work. You just do what you can and build your fitness.

Britter - you need your speedometer checked! "we do a nice pace line at 20-22mph"..... have you hit your head? It went smooth (almost slow) out until Willow hill. Glide down and found a heavy gear just to slowly get the legs working. Coby looks over the shoulder and gets the troopes in line for the rolling pace line. A few minutes later we are we almost at Friant, I'm cramping, driving in my heaviest gear (I know it is only 50-12), and thinking of ways to slowly provide some pay to Britter.... 20-22 mph my a..! Between the cramps and not feeling that I provide a safe environment for the other riders - I fall of the back. Taking it slow to the BB hill and get over it easier then ever before - it was a walk in the park compared to trying to hang on Coby et al.
Funny enough I only joined the group for 8 minutes, but I had fun! Before the summer I will be able to hang all the way to Friant and I will be able to hange for a few miles comming back.
Dropping 20 lbs, Gettting out of bed at 5.20AM to ride most mornings, the carbon bike, the new rolf Prima wheels helped making me faster... but there is a LOOOOONG WAY, until I will be able to hang on for a Thursday ride with the boys in blue.
BTW - I will not put my Sierra Pacific Racing kit on before I can hang a bit longer.

Brian I hope you feel better and that you will be back on the bike shortly. I felt a bit unorganized out there with out you.

Lars,
You did great for your first Thursday Night World Championships. After looking at my ride download it did avg 26 mph out to the town of Friant. The avg watts were low at 244 (means the draft was good) but did have jumps up to 600+ watts. The good news is that it was only 10 min 46 sec from the drop to Broke bridge turn off. So you only need 2 more minutes to reach your first goal!

You should fly the colors any chance you get. That uniform is worth at least 3 mph!!

Hi,

Thanks for clarifying the speed issue. Being my size the flat high speed part should be my force - so I did get a little worried when I was in pain from the start...
I like you comment "the draft was good" - You were sitting on my tail when we were left row... I'm 6"6' and wide as a barn - The draft was fantastic. Going up on the right side I was on you tail - the draft sucked! I need to behind Coby and not someone who has a tiny cross sectional area and is half my waight.
If you had to peak at 600 watts at that streach, I don't even want to know what power I had to generate to hang on (but it explains the funny noise my knees make when I rolled out of bed this morning). Is the rest of the ride the same intensity and a rolling pace line or do you guys calm down after the broken bridge clim?

3mph just from the colors.... Well that sounds like just what the doctor ordered. I do still need to prove my self worthy in a group like that to fly them. When I'm the fifth to get dropped I will pull the good old shoe horn out and try to squeeeeez into the xxxl jersey.

Thanks for making me feel better bye sharing your ride log. 10min 46sec - all I need to do.....

I would say that it gets little slower once into the town of Friant. But going up Broken Bridge it always splits the group into smaller ones. It does go hard to the turn around. The way back is usually easy until we get back onto Friant Road.
